Not included above is Husky - yield 103%, standing ability 4, shortness of straw 7.

A high figure indicates that the variety shows the character to a high degree.
The scales of characters of winter beans do not necessarily correspond with those for spring beans.
All current varieties are coloured flower, high tannin types.
Hilum colour: The export market usually requires a pale hilum in addition to pale, smooth skins. Those indicated have predominantly pale hilums but occasionally off-types may occur in samples. Winter beans rarely meet the specifications for this market.

Arthur
A high yielding variety with shrt straw, ARTHUR
has performed exceptionally well in official and private trials since 2001, producing yields which have been consistently over that of Clipper and Target. ARTHUR is suited to a wide range of soil types and has shown particularly good results on medium to heavy type situations. If Wizard does not suit your situation and or you are looking for a replacement Clipper/Target type variety with shorter straw then ARTHUR is a good alternative variety. ARTHUR has been the most consistent variety in yield performance in years of extreme of either very hot or very wet weather, a key attribute where growers are looking for a reliable variety year on year. ARTHUR is generally available in the merchant trade.

Wizard
WIZARD is a variety in demand, liked by growers and requested by end users. WIZARD has a high yield score on the 2011 PGRO recommended list and is the shortest, stiffest strawed fully recommended variety. This combined with good disease resistance makes WIZARD difficult to resist growing. WIZARD produces a sample which is suitable for the animal feed compounding market and for the middle eastern export market. In official trials it has produced a protein content of around 28.6%, some 1.3% above Clipper and Target.  WIZARD produces a large pale skinned bean which has been accepted by many end users for the export bean market. The introduction of WIZARD now gives bean exporters an opportunity of competing in a wider range of export markets, as the large seed size of WIZARD offers a realistic option to similar sized beans from other competing countries. WIZARD is generally available in the merchant trade

Sultan
SULTAN is a very exciting new winter bean variety for UK farmers. It is a realistic alternative variety due to  very early maturity and short stiff straw. It also combines very high yield with a pale skin and white hilum making it a candidate for the export market in some seasons when demand dictates.
SULTAN offers simply the best agronomic package and possibly the very best gross margin opportunity from any bean variety currently in the market place. SULTAN is available from selected merchants in the trade.

Please contact us if you need to find out your most local supplier of any of the varieties mentioned

RAC Agreement
Arthur and Sultan are RAC (Royalty Area Collection) varieties.  This is an alternative method for paying the breeder for his intellectual property - it is based on a fixed sum per hectare (for certified seed or FSS) for the life of the variety whilst being grown on their farm. Growers are also reminded that it is illegal to sell seed or grain for use as seed to any third party ((Fodder Plant Seed (England) Regulations 2002)) .

Clipper
CLIPPER was first established in 1998 and since then has been very widely grown around the UK.  CLIPPER offers comprehensive agronomics and yield. When initially introduced CLIPPER offered a high yield combined with very good disease resistance, a breakthrough in winter bean breeding at the time. CLIPPER still offers this outstanding performance and has stood the test of time with reliable consistency.
The excellent all round disease rating of CLIPPER comes mainly from its good score for Ascochyta, this has been of particular benefit in recent years when foliar diseases have been more prevelant.
CLIPPER has good standing power and will perform equallly well on a variety of soil types.
